Mother’s Day signals planting season.
Hi, welcome back. On March 12th - I posted the DIY Garden Starter, where I shared the value of starting certain plants indoors, like tomatoes, peppers, kale and eggplant. The why, is our climate in Upstate, New York is short.
For this 2024 Garden Season My goal is to share the journey from day 1 through to the end of the growing season with you - the ups and downs, grin. Fingers crossed for more ups than downs, smile.
Welcome to our new subscribers we are thrilled you are here. My passion for garden to table creations, comes from my passion to grow and nurture plants. I believe it’s an incredible experience to watch a seed grow into something delicious to eat. I believe it’s God’s gift.
As we walk this journey together, I will share my successes and failures. Every year is different, some years are rainy, some years are drought, others - to many pests, powdery mildew, you get it. At the end of the day - I just love it all. Oh, let’s not forget about the birds, squirrels, and rabbits. And an occasional family dog, smile. You make the most of it. Let Go and Let God - what thrives is meant to be that year.
My 2024 Garden Season the Journey
Day 1 - March 12
April 16: edging the garden - over winter the grass creeps in.
April 29: baby plants have their first date outside.
May 7: prepare garden for planting.
May 13: seed potatoes and red onions go in. Garlic 🧄 is growing well, that’s planted in October - harvested in July. Horseradish is a perennial - leafy green beyond the tall garlic row.
May 14: seeds are planted, below is the garden design. My first loss - lost several Roma tomato plants as the hot sun burned their tiny leaves. It was my error; I should have reduced the time in the sun. I did plant 4 - we will see if they survive, fingers crossed. Our spring weather this year was quirky - lots of shady days - resulting in less growth on plants. I don’t use a grow light only natural light in the window.
Coming Soon: hot pepper variety’s- they are doing well, pictures below - they like their soil warm, so I will wait a week or so, or sooner, weather will decide, smile. They are traveling to camp this weekend, as I am leaving them outside now, but need care. So lucky to have a mom like me, grin.
God bless you with lovingkindness.
Thank you for enjoying and supporting Wendy’s Kitchen, you warm my heart.

Wow. You are an organized gardener. The soil looks so hearty and without a weed. It’ll be fun to watch it grow. Where are you? What State and zone.
Hi Cheryl - welcome 🙏! We live in Upstate NY - zone 5. I wish the soil would stay so nice all year, grin. I do try to keep it weeded. My go is to attempt mulching this year - never have. I do enjoy the garden it is a fun hobby. Thanks again and have a great weekend! May your weather be good.
