My 2024 Garden Season (wk. 5)
A seed's journey—week 5 update, Friday, June 21st. Heat wave brings daily watering and new sightings; cubanelle peppers, cayenne harvest, Big Beef tomatoes growing strong.
Seeds become veggies and veggies become creations.
Hi, how are you? Thank you for returning to week 5, June 21st of our seed’s journey. It’s very hot and humid today—not complaining, I don’t mind this weather and the plants seem to thrive as long as they have a good drink in the morning. I am writing at camp, have a great view—excited about the long day, longest day was yesterday—summer solstice, just in case you haven’t heard, grin. Tonight’s going to be a beautiful Waxing Gibbous Moon? Rewind, yeah you didn’t know what that moon phase was either, smile. To keep it simple, it means we are almost at the full moon.
Here’s a quick snap of my view—if you are curious, I write about it now too! Moments on Leland Pond
Last post we had our black beans join the vegetable scene, cantaloupe, kale, Rainbow Swiss Chard, herbs pushing through the dirt. This week the plants are getting stronger, bigger. I thinned out the black beans and harvested 2 cayenne peppers.
Those fabulous cayenne peppers made their way into a grilled Rhubarb Swiss Chard side dish and a Rhubarb Swiss Chard lentil soup. I will be sharing both those recipes next week.
I am starting to get a rhythm going on my writing schedule—recipe, Leland Pond, and garden. It’s been 4-months since we launched Wendy’s Kitchen, now Wendy’s Kitchen & More. Where does the time go. If you download the Substack app—link below, you can follow my daily notes too.
Okay, right—Why are you here today?—oh, yes, it is our weekly garden update, for the rest of the story simply click the image below.
Open arms to our new subscribers and followers we are thrilled you are curious. Love that you stayed. My passion for garden to table creations, comes from my passion to grow and nurture plants. I believe it’s an incredible experience to watch a seed grow into something delicious to eat! God’s gift.
June 18: Spotted my first ripe cayenne pepper 🌶️. What a joy to pick your first veggie, and I do love spicy foods. It’s the entire reason why I began growing a garden 20years ago, to can my own pickled cherry peppers and dill pickles. Below is the in-the-moment snap, that I posted on notes. Notes are visible to you on the Substack app.
Highlights of week 5 taken this morning, June 21st.
We have our first cubanelle pepper sighting today. So thrilled! For those of you who don’t like the spice, these peppers have a mild taste, great for stews or sautéed in a little olive oil for sandwiches, yummy.
That’s it for this week in our seed’s journey. Tune in next week for another garden adventure. Spread the word if you like. Come have fun in the garden!
Or just enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with me!
Thank you for spending a few minutes with Wendy’s Kitchen, I know how busy life can be. We appreciate you for choosing me, smile.
God bless you with lovingkindness.
Until we meet again, enjoy!
Wendy
