My 2024 Garden Season (wk. 7)
A seed's journey—week 7 update, Friday, July 5th. Sunflowers replace garlic, baby bunny eats too much and a mystery squash wilt. The Garden Fairy is in charge!
We are away and the bunny will play…NO! Garden Fairy is in charge, grin.
We are at week 7, my fingers crossed that this means good luck for my little garden, while we are away. Feel free to catch the rest of the stories by clicking the Weekly Garden Update.
I believe it’s an incredible experience to watch a seed grow into something delicious to eat! God’s gift.
The following facts as I found them July 1-2.
July 1: As I gingerly bounce over, peaking through the fence, I am thrilled to see herbs growing well, carrots, kale and Swiss Chard all look healthy, big leaves on the squash, and then I spot the wilt, I sigh. Only one squash plant show signs of wilt, good. Could it be insects, could it be water? I look, no signs—so I move on down the rows, smiling as I notice more peppers, lots of tomatoes and then I hit the black beans. I pause, I look, I can’t quite figure it out—something is wrong, grin.
The squash: I left the squash alone, really not knowing what’s causing one plant to wilt all the outer leaves, but the center appears healthy. Then the strangest thing happened the next morning, the entire plant was standing tall—like here I am, I am fine, just a little hot yesterday. But, by mid-afternoon that same plant wilts again. The mystery wilt is her name. I left Tuesday evening, July 2nd—letting nature decide, grin.
Black beans & baby bunny: My husband casually says I spotted a baby bunny in the yard. Well, there you have it, that baby is enjoying tender leaves. Not all, only the entire middle of the row of my bean plants, grin. Why, most likely, the liquid fence (it’s natural, and safe, smells terrible) is on the outside. Baby bunny was creative squeezing through the opening in the garden where the garlic use to be—dives into the middle, munch, munch. I weeded, added more liquid fence—and left her in the hands of the Garden Fairy.
Sunflowers replace Garlic: Sunflowers—one of my all-time favorite flowers. Besides Black-eyed Susans, coneflowers, roses, oh—well, maybe I love them all. How can you not. Each year I plant a verity of sunflower seeds where the garlic was harvested. With any luck by fall, we have a pretty display of sunny flowers waving hi to everyone that goes by.
That’s it for this week in our seed’s journey. See you next week! Sip a cup of tea or coffee with me as we explore the garden together.
Thank you for spending a few minutes with Wendy’s Kitchen & More, I know how busy life can be.

Until we meet again, buy something from a Farmer’s Market, you will be glad you did.
Enjoy! 💕

Your Garden Fairy is so cute! I have enjoyed watching how your garden is growing. It has been amazing. This is something I would like to do, but alas the iguanas are huge and even if I had a wall around a garden, they would find a way in and eat every single thing.
Have you checked the squash for squash vine borers? I haven't dealt with them personally but I believe they are a common cause for sudden wilting in squash!
