Sundays = Macaroni & Sauce, it’s a Family Tradition
I have often heard from my Italian friends that there was always a pot of sauce or gravy as they liked to call it, simmering on the back burner at their grandmother’s house. Some would share that Thursdays and Sundays were macaroni days. As I married into an Italian family this rings true, except it’s me this small-town Irish girl who is making the old-world homemade sauce, smile. Hum, not quite sure how this happened. But it did.
Let me tell you the story, briefly of course. Over 25 years ago, I made this meatball and sauce recipe for my 100% Italian mother-in-law, and the entire family for Christmas. Bold, I know, grin. They loved it. When I say they loved it, it’s the most requested meal I make. It’s become a family tradition, holidays, birthdays, you name it… The secret I believe is some ingredients come from my garden or what I canned in the fall.
